New license plate recognition
system replaced toll booths
in two WSU parking garages
WSU Transportation Services implemented license plate recognition technology to replace traditional toll booths for the Terrell Library and Smith Center parking garages.
Chris Boyan, associate director of Transportation Services, said instead of paying a cashier when leaving the garages, patrons can now enter their license plate number into a toll machine after parking.
People can also purchase parking vouchers online at parking.wsu.edu before showing up to the lot.
Boyan said the use of license plate recognition technology is part of an approach to eliminate the need for physical permits.
Annual parking permits can now be bought online and registered to a vehicle’s license plate number as well.
Boyan said the reason for the virtual permits is to increase the use of technology and improve customer service.
He said customer feedback after this policy change was positive because it has reduced lines and waiting time at the Transportation Services office.
