U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.13%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the , and sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the rose 1.13%, while the index added 1.09%, and the index climbed 1.51%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the were Boeing Co (NYSE:), which rose 3.81% or 13.20 points to trade at 359.96 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:) added 3.75% or 2.82 points to end at 77.94 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:) was up 3.49% or 6.24 points to 184.82 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:), which lost 3.54% or 2.13 points to trade at 58.16 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:) declined 1.67% or 3.14 points to end at 185.37 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:) shed 1.41% or 0.71 points to 49.69.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:) which rose 11.31% to 23.71, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:) which was up 9.50% to settle at 119.79 and Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:) which gained 7.00% to close at 152.65.

The worst performers were Discovery Inc Class A (NASDAQ:) which was down 8.20% to 28.20 in late trade, Discovery Communications C Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 7.38% to settle at 25.87 and Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 6.58% to 46.60 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were American Electric Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:) which rose 169.93% to 1.080, TESARO Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 58.47% to settle at 73.50 and Global Blood Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 47.81% to close at 46.62.

The worst performers were Cleantech Solutions International Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 48.04% to 0.722 in late trade, Sunesis Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 43.57% to settle at 0.5092 and Sienna Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 37.59% to 6.31 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2266 to 815 and 67 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1667 rose and 985 declined, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.02% to 16.44.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.83% or 10.20 to $1236.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 4.30% or 2.19 to hit $53.12 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 4.04% or 2.40 to trade at $61.86 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.28% to 1.1349, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 113.62.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 96.912.
