UK coronavirus hospital death toll rises by 8

The number of coronavirus deaths in UK hospitals has risen by eight to a total of 34,052.

Six of the latest deaths from the virus occurred in English hospitals, while two fatalities were recorded in Wales.

No new deaths have been reported in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Of the six latest England deaths, four were in the north west, one was in the Midlands and one was in the south east.

In England alone, the number of confirmed reported coronavirus deaths in hospitals has reached 29,425, NHS England said on Tuesday.

Yesterday, the Covid-19 death toll in UK hospitals increased by seven to a total of 34,044.

All coronavirus patients whose deaths were confirmed today were aged between 46 and 96. All had known underlying health conditions.

Eight other deaths were reported without a positive Covid-19 test result.

Nicola Sturgeon announced on Tuesday that confirmed coronavirus cases in Scotland rose by 52 in a day.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said 27 of the new cases occurred in the NHS Grampian area, which covers the Aberdeen outbreak.

Ms Sturgeon said it was unclear how many of these new cases were linked to the outbreak, but the rate of increase seemed to be slowing after a local lockdown was imposed.

The Aberdeen City Council area was put under local lockdown last Wednesday. Shops, restaurants and bars were made to close, and residents were banned from having visitors to their homes. A five-mile travel limit was also put in place.

The lockdown measures are due to be reviewed on Wednesday.

Ms Sturgeon said there have been 253 coronavirus cases in Aberdeen since the outbreak began on July 26 – of which 165 are definitely associated with the outbreak.

She added: “The rate of increase appears at this stage to be slowing down but of course we remain very vigilant.”

The total number of people in Scotland who have tested positive for the virus has risen to 19,079.

Since the local lockdown, Scotland has recorded no coronavirus deaths for 26 consecutive days. The total death toll in Scotland is 2,491. Some 269 people are currently hospitalised in Scotland for coronavirus, with three in intensive care.

Another two people who tested positive for coronavirus in Wales have died, bringing the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,581.

Public Health Wales announced 13 new diagnosed Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 17,476.

Northern Ireland reported no new coronavirus deaths, the Department of Health said.
