Universal Credit May bank holiday payments date: When are benefit payments due this month?

Universal Credit payments are one of several services affected this weekend by bank holiday closures. Bank holidays are not guaranteed days off for everyone, as businesses decide whether or not they will allow their employees an extra day. However, the bank holiday gets its name from the fact most banks and official offices are closed for the day, government buildings among them. This means official payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be delayed.

When are Universal Credit payments made during the spring bank holiday?

The Spring bank holiday runs from Saturday, May 25 to Monday, May 27.

This was formerly a major issue for those on benefits, as early bank holiday payments were classed as two made in one month.

This meant people on the Universal Credit system would receive a reduced sum the next month.

A High Court Ruling means this no longer happens but payment dates can change during a bank holiday.

Talking to Birmingham Live, a DWP spokesman said: “If a payment date is on a bank holiday or weekend, customers will be paid on the last working day before the bank holiday or weekend.”

Those who have their payments due on Saturday 25, Sunday 26 or Monday 27, they will receive their money on Friday, May 24.

Those with payments due on any other date during a working week will have their benefits as normal.

The date people regularly receive Universal Credit depends on when they first apply.

A four-week assessment period applies after the initial request for benefits, one week after which people receive their first payment.

From this first date, people then receive payments on this same date each month.

If you applied for benefits on April 1, you would receive your first payment on May 6, and then every month after on the 6th.

When are child benefit payments made on the spring bank holiday?

Child benefit payments are also affected by the bank holiday weekend.

They work on the same date frame as Universal Credit, meaning those payments due over the weekend and bank holiday will be paid on May 24.

Child benefits are normally paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday, or weekly for single parents.
