US businesses call for exemptions from trade tariffs

US businesses are calling on the Trump administration to give them a way to secure exemptions from the 10 per cent tariffs it is imposing on $200bn of Chinese goods.

A coalition of industry bodies representing sectors from children’s toys to fashion wrote to US trade representative Robert Lighthizer on Wednesday to push for relief from the levies.

“Industries across the board are concerned about the impact that the tariffs will have on their operations, workers, and customers,” read the letter from the group, Americans for Free Trade. The latest round of tariffs gave US companies “very little time” to adjust their supply chains in response, it added.

The letter noted that in previous rounds of tariffs, officials had put in place a process for companies to request exclusions in some circumstances.

A spokesman for the US trade representative’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
