US economic data still delayed after government shutdown

The US commerce department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) said Monday it is working on a revised schedule for the release of economic data reports that were delayed by the five-week government shutdown.

The BEA said it is consulting with the US Census Bureau and other data suppliers to “determine the availability of data used to produce our economic indicators.”

“Until we know more about when source data will be available, we cannot say anything definitive about release dates for specific economic indicators. We will work through this as quickly as possible and provide information as soon as we can,” the BEA said in a statement.

The partial shutdown began on December 22 and ended Friday after President Donald Trump and lawmakers agreed to a deal that would reopen the federal government for three weeks. Agencies such as the BEA returned to work on Monday.

The shutdown delayed several closely watched reports compiled by the commerce department, including housing starts, new home sales, factory orders and retail sales. An initial reading on fourth-quarter gross domestic product, due on Wednesday, is also expected to be postponed.

The labour department’s monthly employment report remains on track to arrive on Friday.
