Valedictorian one of Brewington’s many hats – Daily Journal

A Whiteland Community High School student might know senior Grace Brewington as president of both the student council and the town manager’s student advisory council or as a founding member of a robotics team that went to the robotics world championships, but now they can also know her as valedictorian.

Brewington is graduating at the top of her class of 468 students, but she’ll remember her time in high school for what she worked on outside of the classroom. She’s been her grade’s class president all four years, and she said planning graduation activities has born the fruit of those efforts.

“We’re going to Urban Air; it’s free for any senior,” Brewington said. “We can go and jump around, transportation is provided, (along with) admission. (As) class president all four years, this year has been the most impactful for me because of being able to plan graduation and the senior class trip, (which) is definitely something people are going to remember. People will remember graduation and the class trip; they won’t remember fundraisers from freshman year.”

Her efforts on the robotics team, however, have led her beyond the school and have supported her interest in the science, technology, engineering and math fields, commonly known as STEM, which she intends to pursue in college.

“For sure robotics,” Brewington said of her favorite club. “Having started the team in freshman year as one of the original members, then sophomore year we went to the World Championships.”

At the FIRST Robotics World Championships in St. Louis, she and her teammates competed with 200 teams from across the world, including from Israel, Japan and Mexico. She met an all-girls robotics team from Mexico, members of which she is still friends with, she said.

With her passion for STEM, she intends to pursue a degree in a field related to engineering at Purdue University, whether it be aerospace or environmental engineering. She also intends to attain a minor or a double major, with the other degree in political science and public policy, an interest that is fueled by current events, she said.
