Vitamin D is crucial for the body, as it helps to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy, according to the NHS.

Without enough vitamin D, it’s difficult to regulate the amount of calcium or phosphate in the body.

A severe lack of the vitamin may even lead to bone deformities, rickets, or osteomalacia.

But you could lower your risk of a vitamin D deficiency by eating more eggs, it’s been revealed.

Eggs are a great source of vitamin D, according to nutritionist Dr Steven Lin.

You could get the most vitamin D by specifically eating the yolk, he said.

For the largest benefit, eat the eggs from free-range chickens, as they would’ve spent more time roaming outdoors in the sunlight.

“Vitamin D deficiency is a very common problem today,” said Lin.

“Many people don’t realise that they should be eating more foods sources of vitamin D.

“If you’re unaware whether your diet provides enough vitamin D or not, then you’re likely not eating enough, these foods are quite rare and have to sourced properly.

“Grass-raised chickens produce eggs that contain vitamin D3.

“Forget the egg-white omelettes, vitamin D is only found in the yolk. It contains roughly 50 IU per egg, so you need to make a big frittata to get your full dose of vitamin D.”

Salmon and other fatty fish are the best sources of vitamin D in food, however.

But they must be naturally-raised and ocean-sourced, added the nutritionist.

Other good food sources of vitamin D include beef liver, cod-liver oil, certain mushrooms, and some fortified cereals.

Everyone should spend between 20 and 30 minutes in the sun every day to avoid a vitamin D deficiency.

During the winter months, people struggle to absorb enough ultraviolet light to produce vitamin D.

Everyone should consider taking a vitamin D supplement to prevent a deficiency from September to March.

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms include bone or back pain, if you feel constantly tired, or if you are frequently getting ill.

Other warning signs include hair loss, muscle pain, and having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal than normal.
