ONTARIO – Calling all kids who want to be painted orange and don a green wig — the Children’s Community Theater is holding auditions for its fall production of Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka Jr.”

The auditions, taking place Thursday, Sept. 12, Saturday, Sept. 14 and Monday, Sept. 16, are “very laid back,” according to theater director Ruthie Carlson.

Thespians will have vocal exercises to assess their projection and vocal range for placement in the chorus. Kids needn’t worry about having all eyes on them, Carlson said, as the auditions are in groups.

“We find they loosen up when they’re with their peers,” Carlson said.

While all kids, kindergarten through sixth grade, auditioning will receive a role in the production, Carlson is looking for certain talents for speaking roles.

“Obviously we’re not Broadway,” Carlson said, but she is looking for kids who are “ready to meet someone eye-to-eye” as opposed to looking at their feet.

It’s okay to be shy, Carlson said, but leading kids are happy to be onstage.

Carlson is excited for the theater’s production of this “scrumdidilyumptious musical” because of the story’s legacy.

“It’s an age-old story,” Carlson said, adding she looks forward to audiences seeing the theater’s take on such a classic tale.

A press release from the Four Rivers Cultural Center, which hosts the community theater, highlights that participating in the theater can help kids “build confidence, grow into their creativity, and face challenges as they develop lifelong skills.”

In addition to the growth kids can experience, the end product – performed in November – can be quite entertaining for audiences and actors alike.

“I cannot wait to have 75 Oompa Loompas walking across the stage,” Carlson said.
