Western Governors University is pleased to announce the availability of a new microcredential in Information Technology (IT) – the university’s first to be offered globally. WGU’s IT Career Framework MicroBachelors provides students, IT practitioners, educators and business professionals with an opportunity to advance their IT careers in the rapidly growing industry. The new program is credit-backed and stackable, providing value as a standalone credential, and students can also use the microcredential as credit towards a bachelor’s degree at WGU, pending admission.
“The IT industry is expected to continue to grow at a fast pace for years to come, and there will be an increased demand for skilled workers to fill open positions,” said Dr. Angie Besendorfer, Regional Vice President of Western Governors University. “WGU is committed to addressing workforce needs by providing working adults with the tools needed to help them advance their careers. The IT Framework MicroBachelors program not only allows working adults to earn an industry-verified credential, but it can also be used as a steppingstone for them to earn a bachelor’s degree in information technology, equipping students with the skills required to excel in a variety of IT careers.”
WGU partnered with IT industry leaders to design the IT Framework MicroBachelors program, with the goal of giving learners the foundational skills they need to compete for high-growth, lucrative computer science and IT careers. The program offers instruction on computer networking, security, scripting and programming skills necessary to thrive in a tech-dominated environment. The program is open to adults both looking to add skills to their profiles without pursuing a bachelor’s degree and those interested in earning a bachelor’s degree through WGU’s College of IT. Learners in the program who are interested in a bachelor’s degree can stack the new microcredential into seven different degree programs at WGU: B.S. Computer Science, B.S. Software Development, B.S. Cloud and Systems Administration, B.S. Data Management/Data Analytics, B.S. Information Technology, B.S. Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, and B.S. Network Operations and Security.
Like all WGU degree programs, the IT Career Framework MicroBachelors is competency-based, allowing students to advance as soon as they demonstrate mastery of course materials. WGU is offering the affordable program for less than $1,500, making it possible for busy learners to advance their careers without breaking the bank. Like all edX courses, learners can choose to access course materials for free but will only be granted credit through successful completion of the verified MicroBachelors certificate.
