Who are the UK's unicorns and how did they reach their valuations?

Sightings of the mythical unicorn are surprisingly common in the UK. The country is now home to 13 tech companies with a valuation of more than $1 billion (around £780 million at the time of writing), according to research prepared for Tech Nation by venture capital analytics firm Dealroom.co.

Oxford and Cambridge combined have produced more unicorns than both Paris and Berlin. The five to emerge from Manchester is the same number created in Amsterdam, while Edinburgh and Leeds have also produced multiple unicorns of their own.

Read on for our list of UK unicorns, ranked in order of valuation at the time of writing.
