WOMEN who perform oral sex have a lower risk of recurrent miscarriage, scientists have claimed.
They believe it could be down to a mum-to-be’s immune system.
A new study suggests oral exposure to semen could boost a woman’s immune system before getting pregnant, and protect her from miscarriage.
Scientists from Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands carried out research into recurrent miscarriages – the loss of three or more pregnancies before the 20th week of gestation.
It affects about one per cent of women and the causes can vary, however the exact reason has never actually been identified.
The Dutch team said that most existing research is based on a woman’s immune system, but paternal factors had not been as well explored.
They looked at 97 women, under the age of 36, who had experienced at least three unexplained consecutive miscarriages, as well as 137 women who hadn’t.
Questionnaire results showed that the women who hadn’t lost any pregnancies were performing more oral sex on their partners than average.
Around half (56.9 per cent) of those who miscarried reported having oral sex, while almost three quarters (72.9 per cent) said they had done so.
In their study, published in the Journal of Reproductive Immunology , the researchers led by Dr Tess Meuleman, wrote: “This study suggests a possible protective role of oral sex in the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage in a proportion of the cases.”
The results, however, do not show a causation link and there is no evidence that oral sex is what contributed to the reduction in marriages.
The team suggested that semen might have protective effects towards the foetus.
They added: “Future studies in women with recurrent miscarriage explained by immune abnormalities should reveal whether oral exposure to seminal plasma indeed modifies the maternal immune system, resulting in more live births.”
