Yara Shahidi, Olivia Munn, Chrissy Metz to Be Honored at UN Foundation’s #GirlHero Awards (Exclusive)


The UN Foundation will honor the trio of actresses at the inaugural awards luncheon on Oct. 14, hosted by Kristen Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Tracee Ellis Ross and others.

Yara Shahidi, Olivia Munn and Chrissy Metz will be honored at the UN Foundation and Girl Up’s first annual #GirlHero Awards, hosted by Kristen Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union, Katy Perry, Renee Zellweger and Tony Goldwyn.

The awards luncheon, which aims to celebrate those advocating for gender equality, is set to take place Oct. 14 at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles. Hosted by High School Musical alumna Monique Coleman and veteran TV host Shaun Robinson, the event will highlight both its Hollywood allies and other Girl Up leaders fighting for change. 

Girl Up started as an initiative from the UN Foundation with the goal of preparing young girls for leadership positions in the movement toward gender equality, with around 40,000 participants working at locations in more than 100 countries. The organization provides its participants with leadership and social impact programs, as well as science, technology, engineering and math training.

Grown-ish star and The Hollywood Reporter 2018 Young Hollywood cover girl Shahidi is known for her own education initiatives like Yara’s Club and Eighteenx18, which aim to reach a diverse crowd of young students and voters. Munn recently made waves when she lobbied for the removal of an actor, who was also a registered sex offender, from her current film The Predator, while This Is Us‘ Metz has been an outspoken advocate for body positivity.

Robinson, Pia Baroncini, Corinne Foxx and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein will serve as co-chairs of the luncheon, while others on the hosting committee include Amy Baer, Tracy Brennan, Trisha Cardoso, Glynis Costin, Joy Fehily, Jane Fleming, Renee and Paul Haas, Stacey Wilson Hunt, Laura Lewis, Theresa Peters, Tracy Shaffer and Alissa Vradenburg.
