The audition tape, dated 2002, was made public by The Daily Mail. It had been kept hidden for many years by casting director Matthew Barry. In 2021, an eBay listing offered the tape for $1 million.

According to Barry, Spears left a strong impression on the producers. He mentioned that “Britney blew us all away, our jaws were on the floor.” She was a top contender for the role until Rachel McAdams auditioned and secured the part.
