There have been five mass extinctions on Earth in the past. The sixth extinction refers to the accelerated, widespread extinctions (plural emphasised) is happening during our present time, the Anthropocene, where humans play an overbearingly large part in bringing, as Lynch puts it, the end of many worlds.
