K-pop: Did Karina apologize for falling in love? All you may need to know about controversy



After South Korean pop singer Karina had to issue a written apology to her fans for dating actor Lee Jae-wook, the question being asked is- are K-pop singers not allowed to love? Karina, who fronts the girl group Aespa, promised fans she would “heal the wounds”. The K-pop star posted a message on Instagram, in which she wrote, “I apologize for surprising you greatly”. She added, “I know very well how disappointed my fans who have supported me are and how upset you’re thinking about the memories we shared.” She also told her 12.7 million followers that she wants to make up for hurt fans. She said that she had always been sincere to them, and still every one of them was truly precious to her.

Fans idolize stars

In South Korea and Japan, where fans idolize their stars, it is taboo to fall in love. Most K-pop stars live under strict rules, and they generally do not date publicly. The music labels worry that any relationships may make the stars lose their mystique among fans.

This is not the first time that such a controversy has been stirred. When artists Hyuna and E-Dawn began dating in 2018, the stock of the record label Cube Entertainment dropped several points. The company suspended both artists.
