Any car maker that misses the target is subject to a £15,000 fine. EVs represent less than 17 per cent of the UK’s automotive sales this year.

Sander added that Ford is prepared to sell hybrids into the next decade, pending consumer demand.

No other car manufacturers have yet announced plans to restrict UK petrol sales.
